Ways to Get Involved
Student Special Interest Mixer Host (Los Angeles area)
Open your home to UCLA medical students who are interested in learning more about a specialty from UCLA medical alumni and faculty, who are currently working in that field. The MAA office assists with the alumni guest list. Hosts receive an in-kind donation letter for the food and beverage expenses.
Class Representative - Reunion Committee
It's easy and FUN! Class Representatives reconnect with classmates by making phone calls to encourage attendance at the Reunion. The MAA takes care of planning the event and handling the details and provides a list and contact information. Class Representatives also review and sign (electronically) two-to-three letters and can help make the class scholarship endowment a reality. Don't miss this opportunity to ensure that your Reunion will be a memorable experience.
Conference on Career Choices in Medicine Panelist
The Conference on Career Choices in Medicine is a one-day seminar that provides an informative and spontaneous forum for first-, second-, and third-year medical students to interact with practicing physicians. There are three 40-minute sessions, each with a variety of panels the students can choose from that cover a wide range of specialties. Panelists offer insights and advice and answer students' questions. There is also an informal roundtable discussion during lunch that affords a less-structured dialog. Facilitators recruit a panel of specialists (three to four), as well as coordinate and act as moderators for their sessions. If you would like to participate as a facilitator or panelist, we look forward to hearing from you!
Medical Student Teaching Opportunities 2008-09
Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences
Doctoring 1
Utilizing a problem-based learning format, Doctoring introduces first-year medical students to developmental theory, health promotion, disease prevention, and applications of behavior and neuroscience to the clinical practice of medicine. Emphasis is on the appreciation and cultivation of the patient-doctor relationship, communication skills, and the development of life-long learning skills. Groups meet twice a month, August-May, Tuesday, or Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, 1:30-4:30 p.m. (Six groups of 8 or 9 students each meet with one tutor from psychiatry, psychology, or social work and one physician, usually from primary care). There are a total of 18 class meetings. Faculty development sessions meet at 12:30 , are required, offer CME, and provide lunch. For further information, contact Sherrie Martinez, Doctoring 1 Administrator, at (310) 825-0278. Recruiting is done annually in spring.
Faculty needed from our clinical voluntary or full-time faculty: 18 (up to 20 hours of CME or BBS credit given)
Total hours teaching credit per faculty per year: 80
School of Medicine - Virtual Advisor
The School of Medicine has instituted a virtual advisor Website which will allow students to match with current faculty and alumni via a Web-based program. The student or advisor can request a range of options from email time to personal contact and shadowing opportunities. This site also has a comment section that allows the student to view and select an advisor by various criteria e.g., clinic location, specialty, gender, etc. Sign up to be an advisor; you will enjoy a rewarding mentoring experience and assist medical students in professional development. To complete the on-line application, visit Career Advising David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
