Recovering Medical Equipment for the Needs of Everyone Worldwide (RENEW)
According to the Clinton Global Initiative, more than 7,000 tons
of usable medical materials and supplies are discarded every day
in American hospitals and clinics. Most of these items are
incinerated or deposited in land-fills. Before discarding any usable
medical materials or supplies, please consider donating them to UCLA's
Recovering Medical Equipment for the Needs of Everyone Worldwide
(RENEW). RENEW reduces waste by collecting medical supplies that would
otherwise be discarded for use in developing countries visited by
UCLA medical alumni, faculty and students. Afghanistan, Haiti and
Zimbabwe are only a few of the countries that have benefited from
RENEW. For information on what and how to donate, visit
http://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/renew/index_files/How_to_donate.htm.
UCLA Mobile Clinic Project
Now in its tenth year of service to the homeless and transient communities of greater Los Angeles, the UCLA Mobile Clinic Project (MCP) is a student-run homeless clinic made up of graduate students from the Schools of Medicine, Law and Public Health, as well as undergraduates who serve as caseworkers. There is an extreme need for volunteer health care professionals due to the increasing volume of MCP clients. Volunteers assist the students who are working to provide the best care possible to the homeless, in hopes of improving their quality of life and well being. If you are interested in volunteering as an attending physician or donating to the cause, please call 310-825-4600 or visit www.mcp.ucla.edu.
Conference on Career Choices in Medicine Panelist
The Conference on Career Choices in Medicine is a one-day event that provides an informative and spontaneous forum for medical students to learn about their professional choices after graduation. Panelists offer insights and advice about their specialties and answer students’ career related questions. Participating as a panelist is a wonderful opportunity to interact with medical students and reconnect with fellow alumni from the UCLA medical community.
Student/Physician Specialty Interest Mixer Host (Los Angeles area)
 |
Dr. Christian de Virgilio & medical students at a Surgery Specialty Interest Mixer |
Open your home to medical students, colleagues and fellow alumni to host a Student/Physician Specialty Mixer. Specialty Mixers are informal and intimate gatherings where physicians and students come together to discuss their medical training and professional experiences in their area of expertise. The MAA office will assist you with the guest list and logistics of organizing the mixers. Hosts receive an in-kind donation letter for the food and beverage expenses.
MAA Reunion Class Representative
It's easy and fun! Class representatives reconnect with classmates by making phone calls to encourage attendance at their class reunion. If you are a member of the class of 2000, 1990, 1980, 1970, 1960 or a “Golden Grad” (celebrating more than 50 years since graduating medical school), don’t miss the opportunity to ensure that your 2010 Reunion is a memorable experience.
