Class Scholars: 1979

Se Fum (Steven) Wong, Class of 2014

Se Fum (Steven) Wong, Class of 2014, was born in Philadelphia. Wong first became interested in a medical career when he observed the interactions between his family members and their physicians.

After graduating from Arcadia High School, Wong matriculated to the University of California, Berkeley, where he enrolled as a chemistry and biology major. Academically, he was near the top of his class, making the dean’s list on multiple occasions and eventually graduating from the college of chemistry magna cum laude with high honors.

In the community, Wong volunteered through his church at Bay Area homeless shelters, served in leadership roles with the UCB Asian American Student Association and worked as a biology tutor with the UCB Student Learning Center (which turned into a job as an undergraduate student instructor). On summer breaks, he served at both the City of Hope Cancer Hospital and the University of Southern California Norris Cancer Center.

Wong worked at the Machen Lab in the UCB Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, where he designed and conducted electrophysiology experiments. Upon graduation, he moved back to Southern California to be close to his family and took a research position at the City of Hope Department of Immunology.

In fall 2010, Wong was admitted to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is enrolled in the second year core science curriculum. MAA is proud to present Se Fum (Steven) Wong as the 2011-12 Class of 1979 Medical Student Scholar.
