  • Thank You Letter

Dear Class of 1955,

I am both thrilled and grateful to receive the Medical Alumni Association scholarship from UCLA’s first class. Your generous contributions will alleviate some of my financial pressures and allow me to focus on pursuing my interests in medicine.

Although I have been at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA for only one year, I have already begun to shape some of my professional and personal ambitions. Recently, I was selected as a recipient of the Schweitzer Fellowship, a grant that allows students in health-related fields to develop and implement a project that addresses health disparities in under-served communities. I am partnering with a classmate, along with a community-based organization, to reduce recidivism rates through education and empowerment at a local women’s jail.

During my first year, I participated in various UCLA mobile clinics throughout the Los Angeles area and look forward to serving as a coordinator for one of the sites this year. Over the summer, I also undertook a challenging and rewarding research position, working for a professor in the division of surgical oncology, studying the immunological foundations of melanoma treatment response.

The support I have received from instructors, counselors and fellow students has been overwhelming. I appreciate being a part of this fine institution and look forward to my next three years here.

Once more, I would like to express my gratitude for being selected to receive the Class of 1955 Medical Student Scholarship. I plan to join the alumni community upon my graduation and hope that I continue the legacy of excellence established by the classes that have come before mine.

Sincerely,

Maria Aleshin
