Class Scholars: 1955

Maria Aleshin, Class of 2014

Maria Aleshin, Class of 2014, was born in Volgsk, Russia. Following her family’s immigration to America, Maria graduated from Mount Carmel high school in San Diego. She matriculated to the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in molecular and cellular biology.

At UCB, Aleshin maintained superior grades, placed on the dean’s list multiple times, and graduated with highest distinction in just three years, all while working part time to defray her educational expenses. She volunteered in the community as a science and math tutor at Turning Point Educational Services in Oakland and at the University of California, San Francisco Cancer Resource Center, where she helped patients locate support programs and resources to assist in their recovery.

Aleshin worked as a research assistant in the Berkeley molecular epidemiology and toxicology laboratory and as an intern in the research and development department at Diazyme Laboratories. After graduating, she took a position as a staff research associate in the department of vascular surgery at UCSF.

In 2010, Aleshin was admitted to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where she has continued her success in the classroom and in the community. She is now entering the second year of the core science curriculum and is a regular volunteer at the student-run homeless healthcare clinics. MAA is proud to present Maria Aleshin as the Class of 1955 Medical Student Scholar for the 2011-2012 academic year.
