Class Scholars: 1975
Gavin Davis, Class of 2010
Gavin Davis, Class of 2010, was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He is the older of two children born to parents working in the real estate industry. When Gavin was eight, his interest in medicine was piqued when his father had anterior cruciate ligament surgery. Gavin found that he was naturally drawn to the sciences in high school, and he began to think about becoming a physician. After his graduation from Deerfield High School, he enrolled at the University of Illinois as a double major in honors Biology and Chemistry.
Gavin's passion for medicine, high-energy level, and need for challenge led him to explore emergency medicine. He worked in the Highland Park Hospital emergency department registration area while earning his EMT-B license, and spent three summers serving as a hospital emergency technician. Gavin volunteered for the Illinois Best Buddies program, pairing with a developmentally disabled teen during his junior and senior years at UI. He was recruited by the chemistry department as a teaching assistant in organic chemistry and was an officer in the UI Pre-Health Honor Society. Gavin graduated summa cum laude and began applying for medical school, with UCLA as his top choice. The followings is an excerpt from one of his letters of recommendation:
"Mr. Davis is motivated, tenacious, and responsible. He displays good judgment and maturity when working independently, and exhibits leadership and organization skills in groups. Gavin has a clear intellectual ability, an abiding interest in medicine, a strong desire to help others, and an admirable character. He is certain to be successful in medical school; he is an outstanding prospect for your program, and I give him my highest recommendation."
In fall 2006, Gavin accepted admission to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He has continued his interest in emergency medicine, currently as an officer of the Emergency Medicine Interest Group, and has maintained his strong standing in the classroom, as indicated by this excerpt from a faculty evaluation:
"Gavin's performance in the spring semester was excellent, and he responded well to constructive criticism. He was an excellent contributor to class discussions and was always punctual. In his interviews, he showed a real knack for making the patients comfortable, and especially for empowering them, as a feature of his counseling."
Gavin Davis is bright, energetic, and motivated, with a clear vision of how he wishes to contribute to the practice of medicine. We are excited to follow his development as a student and a physician, and proud to present him as the recipient of the Class of 1976 Scholarship. |
