60th Anniversary Challenge for Medical Student Scholarships

Reaffirming the need to invest in tomorrow’s doctors, the MAA has partnered with the School of Medicine to support the 60th Anniversary Challenge for Medical Student Scholarships. The Challenge aims to generate $2 million in alumni gifts by December 31, 2011. To stress the urgency of this initiative, $1 million has been allocated to provide a 50% match to gifts of $1,000 or more.

The need for financial support is greater than ever as the costs and debts of medical education soar. Preparing the next generation of physicians to meet the healthcare challenges of our day is critical. We urge you to invest in our students. Make a gift.

MAA White Coat Fund

In the medical profession, the white coat is the symbol of clinical service and care. At the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the White Coat Ceremony provides an inspiring start to the four-year journey toward becoming a physician. In the presence of family, friends, and faculty members, the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs and other senior representatives of the School place a white coat on each student’s shoulders. The MAA welcomes the incoming students into the medical community with a gift. The ceremony concludes with the students vowing in unison to always maintain professional attitudes and behaviors in work and in their relationships with classmates, teachers and the community. Support this tradition and incoming medical students by making a gift to the MAA White Coat Fund.

While the School is a state institution - only 13% of its funding comes from California. To meet a critical need, the UCLA Medical Alumni Association launched the Alumni Class Scholarship Campaign. One of the aims of the MAA is to offset the tremendous cost of medical education for students, many of whom face debts of $100,000 or more at graduation.

The Alumni Class Scholarship Campaign encourages each Reunion class to raise $100,000 and create an endowed scholarship fund. Once the goal has been reached, the class scholarship is awarded annually to a current medical student.

The MAA hopes that you will thoughtfully consider making a gift to your class scholarship fund. Several alumni already have pledged between $5,000 and $25,000, payable over five years. Although these levels may not be possible for everyone, the MAA’s goal is 100% participation.

Class Scholars

A Class Scholar is selected by the Office of Student and Resident Financial Services and matched with a class who has reached its endowment goal. The match and money continue until the student graduates.
